The mandate of Government Relations

The UBC office of Government Relations’ mandate is twofold: to promote and enhance strategic relations with all levels of governments, and to advance to governments UBC’s overall vision and priorities. In this context, government is considered to be the municipal, regional, provincial and federal levels and to include governing and opposition parties, politicians, civil servants and government agencies.

Strategic objectives of the Office of Government Relations

The UBC Government Relations unit works to develop and implement focused government relations efforts on institutional priorities as identified by the UBC administration.

In working towards this goal, Government Relations cultivates long-term relations at all levels of government with both political and bureaucratic representatives. This includes inviting both elected members as well as senior bureaucrats to campus to visit faculties and meet with UBC representatives. These visits also provide an opportunity to present UBC’s innovative projects or engage in round table discussions or forums with both faculty and students.

The Government Relations office also organizes meetings and events in Vancouver, Victoria and Ottawa for senior UBC administration, faculty and students to interact with the members of the three levels of government to keep them aware of the university’s initiatives and agendas with government.

As well, Government Relations helps to build the capacity (skills, knowledge, awareness) of the broad university community to relate to government and to answer any questions or give direction to members of the UBC community in relating to the different levels of government.
